On September 26, 1875, Major Owen Lanyon took his post as Administrator of Griqualand West. This chapter discusses his efforts to groom Griqualand West. Lanyon pushed on with reordering Griqualand West and dispossessed the Griqua of their traditionally held lands. He developed little empathy for Griqualand West, and dismissed it as the most hideous and disgusting place he has ever been to.
