The uKhahlamba is a chain of mountains that divided the British Colony of Natal from Basutoland. This chapter narrates Major Anthony Dunford's expedition to the uKhahlamba with the aim of taking the head of Bushman's River Pass, which led from the Colony of Natal (a British possession since 1843) to Basutoland. Basutoland is an African kingdom that the British had annexed in 1868 and turned over to the administration of the Cape Colony in 1871.
