This chapter discusses the Boers of the Zuid-Afrikaansche Republiek or South African Republic and their campaign against the resurgent Maroteng. The Boers were a militia with no structured military training. By the late 1850s, Boers were operating like mounted infantry and in the 1870s acquired the best weapons technology available.
