This chapter examines the use of food and drink for civic occasions and particularly in the life of the guilds that formed such an important component of the urban community. Food and drink created community, adding important elements to urban gatherings, and offering opportunities for entertainment, commemoration, and gift-giving to further the civic cause. The dignity of these occasions was employed to add to civic grandeur: among the participants might be found the leading members of a community. These activities were widespread across urban society, and giving food on many of these occasions was a customary practice and expectation. To this end, food had an important role at municipal meetings: drinking and, on many occasions, eating together added conviviality, common purpose, and an individual character to each event.
