Delivering the Spirit

(p.87) 4 Delivering the Spirit
Transient Apostle

Timothy Luckritz Marquis

Yale University Press

This chapter talks about the performative work of an “apostle” placed in the middle of a number of ancient expectations with regards to the limitations of the ability of language to change the world. It presents a personal interpretation of the social implications of Paul's self-depiction as a so-called “courier” and messenger in the context of the epistolary metaphor. This interpretation also considers early work on introduction/recommendation letters and the purpose of ancient couriers.
