This introductory chapter provides an overview of the history of Soviet theater. It describes the importance of the theater as a profession in the Russian Empire; the founding of the Moscow Art Theater in 1898; theater in the decade leading up to the outbreak of the Great War; theater under the Soviet regime; Stalin's influence in the arts; and theater following the collapse of the Soviet Union.
