Focusing on the Spanish Civil War, this chapter discusses the Comintern's involvement after the outbreak of the civil war in 1936. In accordance with Stalin's instructions, a directive was sent to the leadership of the Communist Party of Spain along with instructions on how to deal with the Spanish government. The chapter demonstrates the extent of Soviet interference in the political situation of Spain as illustrated by cipher messages dealing with the issue of elections for a Spanish parliament.
