Climate change in the Arctic region will have significant impacts on global geopolitics and US national security strategy. By opening access to the Arctic, even seasonally, climate change may destabilize previously settled geopolitical balances. This chapter reviews some of the implications of these shifts and analyzes the development of US Arctic strategy through reviewing high-level US security policy. The lack of discussion of Arctic strategy in relation to US grand strategy is identified as hindering the effective implementation of US policy goals in the region, particularly as the high cost and long timelines associated with Arctic militarization pose formidable challenges.
